Horne says he's 'cutting red tape' for Title I funding

Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne announced Monday that one requirement for schools to receive Title I funding will be reduced going forward.

It’s the yearly Comprehensive Needs Assessment schools fill out to identify challenges and areas for improvement. Federal law requires them for Title I funds to go to low-income schools and other federal formula grants.

Horne lowered the requirement by roughly 88% — from 168 questions, to 20. In a statement, Horne said he’s cutting red tape after the feedback he received from teachers. He said they brought up measurements regarding Social Emotional Learning, saying they weighed the previous assessment down and detracted from teaching.
