A coalition of artists, journalists and actors calls AI 'the greatest art heist in history'

A coalition including artists, journalists, actors and others has written an open letter calling on publishers to restrict their use of AI generated illustrations.

In it, they write that “AI-art generators are trained on enormous datasets, containing millions upon millions of copyrighted images, harvested without their creator’s knowledge, let alone compensation or consent.”

The letter goes on to say, “This is effectively the greatest art heist in history.”

Molly Crabapple and Marisa Mazria Katz are behind the letter; Crabapple is an artist and journalist, while Katz is a journalist and executive director of the Center for Artistic Inquiry and Reporting. The Show spoke with them earlier, and started by asking Molly how much it’s happening that publications are using art that’s generated by artificial intelligence.
