'Dark sky' communities have been fighting light pollution for decades. And it all started in Arizona

You’ve probably heard of the concept of light pollution, and you may have even heard of "dark sky" communities that work to keep it at bay. 

But you might not have known that that movement began in Arizona.

In 1988, the International Dark Sky Association, which is now known as DarkSky International, was founded in Tucson. In 2001, Flagstaff became the world’s first International Dark Sky City. 

From there, the effort has gone worldwide — but light pollution is only growing. The Show spoke with Ruskin Hartley, DarkSky International’s executive director, about it.
