The University of Arizona is launching a new College of Health Sciences, as part of a larger initiative from the Arizona Board of Regents.
Earlier this month, ABOR rolled out its AZ Healthy Tomorrow initiative, which leverages the combined resources of the state’s three public universities to address Arizona’s growing health care needs. $30 million has been allocated to support the universities in this effort.
UA’s new college will initially offer five graduate-level degree programs, including Midwifery, Physician Assistant, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Genetic Counseling and Clinical Translational Sciences.
That last one is a research-based degree that examines the connections between basic lab science and treatments, diagnostics and drugs used in clinical practice.
Arizona State University has also announced the launchof a School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering.
Arizona ranks near the bottom in many health system performance indicators.
The state is 44th in access and affordability, 41 in prevention and treatment, and public health funding is 50% below the national average.
