FEMA funds are coming to Arizona to help with asylum seeker arrivals

Arizona’s border counties will get  a new round of federal funding from FEMA to help asylum seekers arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border.

FEMA money is going to organizations working in five Arizona sites, including Pima, Cochise and Yuma counties along the border.

Migrants who are admitted into the U.S. to await their asylum hearings don’t receive funding or other assistance from the federal government. Aid groups and border communities have stepped in to help asylum seekers with things like COVID tests, shelter and travel coordination.

Organizations can apply to receive reimbursements from FEMA for those services.

This round of the agency’s funding includes more than $23 million for organizations and counties in Arizona.
