AZ monsoon means making preparations for pets

As the monsoon season arrives, pet owners need to take action in order to protect their animals from intense weather. Among the dangers for these pets include becoming lost and being afraid as a result of conditions such as thunderstorms and high winds.

However, there are ways to address such challenges.

Kim Powell is with the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.

"A lot of dogs like their kennel so have that open. Make it nice and comfortable for them. Just make sure they have everything they need to be comfortable, and then, of course, if they are outside or they have a doggie door, make sure your gate is locked, they have a lock on the gate," she said.

Powell also recommends keeping pets’ stress levels down with toys and extra space. Maricopa County has said it sees an increase in shelter animals around the July 4 holiday.
