If it were not for immigration, the white population in America would have dropped by more than 80,000 people last year compared to the previous year, according to population estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.
Maricopa County had the largest gains in the white population across the country.
Latest census data shows the county gained 35,000 new white residents in 2022.
It also saw the largest overall population gain, mostly due to domestic migration.
The county also saw the biggest gain in the American Indian and Alaska Native population, with more than 3,100 new residents.
Nationally, immigration also drove Asian growth last year. But the Hispanic and Black populations saw natural growth, meaning more births than deaths.
The new Census Bureau report also found that the nation’s median age saw a slight uptick from 38.7 to 38.9 years between 2021 and 2022
