How SCOTUS ruling in Navajo Nation water case can affect future negotiations

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the federal government does not have to determine the Navajo Nation’s water needs and help come up with a plan to meet those needs. The decision was 5-4.

In a statement, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said the running was disappointing, but that his job as president is to represent and protect the Navajo people, its land and its future, and that “the only way to do that is with secure, quantified water rights to the Lower Basin of the Colorado River.”

The Show spoke more about this case with Rita Maguire, an attorney who argued the case before the high court on behalf of the state of Arizona, Nevada and Colorado, as well as major water providers in several states.
