Initial data shows that Arizona’s spike in pedestrian deaths last year was the largest number increase of all states surveyed by the Governors Highway Safety Association.
The association’s new Spotlight on Highway Safety report projects that Arizona will be one of three states responsible for a small rise in pedestrian deaths last year.
An initial count of pedestrians killed in Arizona traffic in 2022 totaled 307, which would be 47 more deaths than the previous year and a roughly 40% increase from the state’s 2019 tally.
Only New Mexico is projected to have had a worse pedestrian-fatality rate.
The Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety did not reply to a request for comment on the report.
