Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs has issued two executive orders to modernize Arizona school buildings and ensure their safety.
In a statement Thursday, Hobbs said she’s heard from parents and educators across Arizona who have concerns about outdated school buildings.
A 1998 law requires school facilities to meet minimum building adequacy standards.
It also requires the state to conduct inspections of those buildings every five years.
But, Hobbs said those standards haven't been updated in many years.
Her first order directs the state to develop and implement a plan for conducting robust, in-person inspections with qualified personnel at least once every five years. and provide detailed reports to her office.
The second order establishes a council tasked with updating the minimum adequacy guidelines for school facilities.
