2 Sonoran towns get federal 'Pueblos Mágicos' distinction

Mexico’s tourism ministry has selected the latest additions to its “magical town” program — including two more towns in Sonora.

Popular beach town San Carlos and Ures, in the Sonora River basin, are Sonora’s newest " Pueblos Mágicos."

They are among 45 towns across the country recently recognized by Mexico’s Tourism Ministry for their unique natural, historic and cultural significance, as well as their tourism potential.

Sonoran Gov. Alfonso Durazo said he was proud to see two towns in the state receive the designation, which he believes will massively increase tourism to the towns and bring both state and federal resources for infrastructure projects and promotion.

The designation was launched in 2001, and there are 177 Pueblos Mágicos across Mexico.

The Sonoran towns of Alamos and Magdalena de Kino were also designated as magic towns in 2005 and 2012 respectively.

Mexico added a "Barrios Mágicos" title for neighborhoods with historic and cultural significance last year. One of Hermosillo's oldest neighborhoods, Villa de Seris, was among the first in the country to receive the Barrio Mágico designation.
