Hiker dies in remote stretch of Grand Canyon National Park

A 57-year-old woman died within a remote stretch of the Grand Canyon, officials reported Monday.

The woman was attempting an eight-mile hike in Tuweep when she lost consciousness.

A ranger responding when the woman was first reported in distress pronounced her dead at 1 in the morning. Temperatures in the area were at 100 degrees. And elsewhere within the Grand Canyon, temperatures soared to 114.

An investigation is underway.
