Scottsdale says it’s the first Arizona city to mandate the 2021 edition of the International Energy Construction Code and the International Green Construction Code. The standards apply to all new commercial and multifamily developments.
The green codes call for shading and cool pavements, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, recycled materials, and improved indoor air quality through paints, adhesives, sealants and flooring.
The City Council approved the mandate, which is expected to cut each new building’s water use by 20% and greenhouse gas emissions by at least 13%.
In a press release, Scottsdale said the standards align with the voter-approved general plan to reduce energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the heat island effect.
