Massive error discovered in Republican critique of gender affirming care executive order

Arizona Republican senators have claimed that an executive order to expand gender affirming care for state employees and retirees would cost taxpayers $788 million a year.

The actual number is $788,000.

Capitol Media Services obtained a Department of Administration report that shows the cost to expand gender affirming care is actually so small in the grand scheme that the state won't even increase premiums for employees.

The agency’s director also says gender affirming care for eligible employees and retirees represents 0.1% of current insurance claims.

The communications director for Senate Republicans acknowledged the error and said it was a typo.
