Maricopa County has taken in 250 lost dogs in less than a week; some adoption fees being waived

Since last June 30, Maricopa County Animal Care and Control has taken in about 250 lost dogs.

The agency was already over capacity, and now with nearly 800 dogs in their care, adoption is not keeping up.

Kim Powell with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control says if you’re looking for a lost dog, check your area shelter.

“Very rarely do they get very far. A lot of the time they’re somewhere in their neighborhood and of course we recommend posting flyers as well in your neighborhood. And the Nextdoor app is a great tool for that," Powell said.

The Bissell Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters adoption event begins Thursday. Adoption fees will be waived for dogs over 6 months old.
