Phoenix may encounter showers and thunderstorms despite high temperatures

The hot weather is here to stay for a few more days, at least. Temperatures will reach 115 degrees this weekend. However, there may be a chance for storm conditions.

It has been four months since the Phoenix area had any measurable rain. That’s according to the National Weather Service in Phoenix. But we might catch a break with the possibility of showers and thunderstorms in the forecast.

Ryan Worley is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

“Rain chances for Monday look to be similar to what this weekend will have, around a twenty to thirty percent chance and then those rain chances will start to diminish as we go further into this week," he said.

An excessive heat warning is still in effect until Monday night. The Valley is also expected to continue its streak of higher than average, low temperatures at or above 90 degrees.

Worley explained the hot low temperatures.

“It also has to do with the urban heat island effect. All the concrete and all the asphalt around just really helps keep those temperatures elevated going into the evening and overnight hours," he said.

He also said higher moisture levels maintain higher temperatures. As of Saturday, we’ve had 23 consecutive days of temperatures reaching 110 degrees or higher.
