Sierra Club appeals Arizona Corporation Commission ruling on gas plant expansion

The Arizona Corporation Commission recently approved a permit for a gas-powered generating station near a historic African-American community close to Coolidge.

But a nonprofit has appealed the decision.

The commission had initially rejected Salt River Project’s request for a permit, but reversed itself after the utility reached a deal with local residents.

During a commission hearing, critics complained that details on the settlement were hard to come by, and last week, the Sierra Club petitioned for a rehearing.

Sandy Bahr, a spokeswoman for the group, says the ACC should be more transparent.

"I mean they can disagree with us, but they need to look at the evidence, and they need to make a decision based on what’s in the record, and in this case, there’s hardly anything in the records, regarding this new proposal," Bahr said.

SRP says the plant expansion is necessary to meet expected growth in the Valley.
