The city of Tucson will receive $50 million in federal grant money to expand affordable housing options.
The money comes from the Housing and Urban Development Department. In May, Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly announced another $6 million in funding from the agency to address low-income housing shortages across the state.
Mayor Regina Romero says the money announced this week will help fund new affordable housing projects and existing efforts like the Tucson House, a high-rise apartment building that’s used for public housing.
During a housing study that met for several months late last year, state monitors found there was a shortfall of 275,000 single family homes across the state.
