Gov. Katie Hobbs sent a letter to Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne Friday, asking for detailed plans for protecting the personal data of Arizona students and families.
The company responsible for the financial administration of the state’s school voucher program, ClassWallet, recently experienced a data breach.
Shortly after, both the head of the voucher program and its operations director resigned from their roles.
In a statement, Hobbs said that raises concerns and questions about the administration of the program and the protection of student data.
An Arizona Department of Education official said the department was examining the letter, but in the meantime issued a statement from ClassWallet’s CEO, Jamie Rosenburg.
“The problem has been solved," Rosenburg said. "It was a permission setting error. Once discovered, we (ClassWallet) took immediate action and corrected the permission setting. Additionally, we performed a database search and concluded no other users were affected. Therefore, this is an isolated incident to a single user.”
