The Maricopa Association of Governments is holding several workshops to conduct safety training for crossing guards.
Participants are provided with procedures and resources in preparation for the school year. Some schools send their own employees to participate in the training.
Margaret Herrera serves as the association’s transportation safety program manager.
“Because they can’t hire a crossing guard, they’ll ask their janitors to go out, so it might be a janitor coming to the training that might have to perform those duties at any given time,” she said.
Two more in-person workshops will be held in Scottsdale and Peoria in August. Those unable to attend will have access to the training materials online two weeks after the event.
