Record streak of days at or above 110 degrees finally breaks

It might be hard to believe that 105 degrees would be considered a relief. But that’s the case for residents in Phoenix where the monthlong streak of temperatures at or above 110 came to an end Monday.

Thirty-one straight days at or above 110 degrees is now the number to beat as monsoon weather knocked temperatures down by several degrees Monday.

The previous record was set in 1974 at 18 straight days. That’s nearly two weeks shorter than the new record.

But "relief" from the heat isn’t expected to last long.

“As long as things stay on track that streak, at least the consecutive streak, will be broken,” said Ryan Worley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Phoenix.

July was the city’s hottest month ever recorded, with chances for August to be even hotter.
