Phoenix summers have always been hot, but this summer is breaking records — here and across the world. We saw an unprecedented 31-day streak of days over 110-degrees, and our overnight lows are now reaching new highs.
Last week, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego appeared virtually alongside President Joe Biden as he announced a series of actions to combat extreme heat nationwide.
The plan is multifaceted.
The Labor Department will issue a heat hazard alert to protect workers from extreme heat, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will provide funding to make buildings more efficient, there will be more than $1 billion to plant trees from the Forest Service, and there’s even an effort to improve forecasting from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
But is it enough? And what does our changing climate mean for the future of the nation’s fifth-largest city?
