Arizona Senate confirms DPS director but won't act on other nominations

Before adjourning for good and ending a historically long legislative session, the Arizona Senate confirmed Jeffrey Glover to lead the Department of Public Safety.

Glover is just one of a handful of Gov. Katie Hobbs’ nominees to lead state agencies that were confirmed this year by the Senate. Meanwhile, dozens more were never acted on.

Those nominees will continue to serve in the interim — nominees to lead state agencies may serve for up to a year without the Senate’s confirmation.

Technically, a Senate committee could meet between now and the beginning of the next regular session, in January 2024, to vet those nominees. But Sen. Jake Hoffman, the Republican chair of the Committee on Director Nominations, said he has no intention of holding hearings unless Hobbs rescinds many of her executive orders.

Hoffman halted hearings in June after Hobbs issued an executive order consolidating abortion prosecutions in Arizona under the Attorney General’s Office.
