Sports betting revenue and taxes took a dive in May in Arizona

May numbers for sports betting in Arizona showed a more than 18 percent drop in revenue and taxes compared to May last year.

The website BetArizona.com called the decline atypical, as markets generally see year over year growth, even for the month after college basketball ends.

A state Gaming Department spokesman said revenue and taxes are calculated by total bets minus payouts, so more winning bets means less revenue.
