Percent of undocumented students in college in Arizona slightly higher than national share

The American Immigration Council crunched recent U.S. census data and found the percent of undocumented students in college in Arizona was slightly higher than the national share.

The information analyzed is from a year before voters here approved letting undocumented students pay in-state tuition.

The report says 2.1% of postsecondary students in Arizona in 2021 were undocumented and that number slightly beat the national share.

This is typical for states with big populations and a large number of immigrants, said Steven Hubbard, senior data scientist with the American Immigration Council.

“Arizona will be a very interesting state to see what happens as far as enrollment with the new policy," Hubbard said.

Hubbard also said a chance to pay in-state tuition will grow the number of undocumented Arizonans who continue to study beyond high school, but he does not expect the increase to be large.
