In a new court filing, Arizona’s top Republican lawmakers claim the voter-approved law designed to shed light on “dark money” actually infringes on the constitutional right of the Legislature to make laws.
The Arizona Constitution requires public disclosure of certain political donors. But over the years, more privacy protections were added for donors who gave money through third parties.
Last year, voters approved Proposition 211, which is designed to disclose the identities of top donors to candidates or ballot measures.
But Senate President Warren Petersen and House Speaker Ben Toma claim the new law gives too much power to the Secretary of State's Office and the Citizens Clean Elections Commission.
No date has been set for a hearing. Similar challenges have been thrown out, and a separate challenge is in federal court.
