BLM proposes changes for recreation in Table Mesa Road area

The Bureau of Land Management wants to make changes to the Table Mesa Road area north of Phoenix.

Table Mesa Road is located between New River and Black Canyon City, and can attract a lot of traffic on weekends when people look for places to camp, hike, ride and target shoot.

BLM officials said they would like to reduce conflicts between these uses and protect natural resources. The agency has proposed campgrounds, interpretive sites, trails and target shooting areas for more than 11,000 acres, with an option to expand them.

"So, hopefully this plan would help structure and organize that area a little bit, that would improve visitor safety and reduce visitor conflict and things like that," said Chris Wonderly with the BLM.

Public comment on the plan is open through Aug. 31.
