With student loan payments set to resume soon, Attorney General Kris Mayes is warning Arizonans about potential scams.
Earlier this summer, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down President Biden’s loan forgiveness plan. That means loans will start accruing interest again in September, and about 900,000 Arizonans will have to make payments in October.
With that in mind, Mayes said scams are likely and borrowers should be aware of unsolicited calls, emails, text messages and letters from people pretending to be loan servicers or promising debt relief.
To avoid being an easy target, she recommends borrowers update their contact information on the loan servicer's website and on StudentAid.gov.
But those who do fall for a scam can get help by filing a consumer complaint with the Attorney General's Office.
