A federal appeals court will allow two transgender girls to play on girls sports teams at their respective schools, at least for now.
On Monday, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected bids by Republican lawmakers and the Arizona schools chief to delay an order blocking the state from restricting the girls’ athletic options.
“My view is that this is a first step toward letting ‘males’ play in female sports in general," said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne. "And so this is a long-term fight. And it’s an important enough issue that we’ll win in the U.S. Supreme Court.”
The case was brought to federal court by the National Center for Lesbian Rights. The court won’t consider legal arguments in the case until November at the earliest.
