The state of abortion in Arizona — and what’s next on the legal front

The abortion landscape in our county and in Arizona has been upended in the last year. What was once a constitutional right was gone overnight — and providers, experts and advocates on both sides have been navigating a new reality ever since.

In Arizona, we spent much of the year not knowing what the law even was in the state. A back and forth between a territorial-era near ban on abortion and a recently passed 15-week ban is not over yet. But, until the Arizona Supreme Court rules on the latest appeal, abortion in our state is legal up until 15 weeks.

The Show hosted a roundtable discussion with Jen Piatt and Dr. DeShawn Taylor to talk about the current legal landscape surrounding abortion — and how the changes have affected at least one abortion provider in Arizona.

Piatt is a research scholar who specializes in reproductive rights as well as co-director of Center for Public Health Law and Policy at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. Taylor is owner of Desert Star Family Planning and author of the new book, "Undue Burden: A Black Woman Physician on Being Christian and Pro Abortion in the Reproductive Justice Movement."
