Sedona council considers banning off-highway vehicles on city streets

Sedona’s City Council will consider an ordinance Tuesday afternoon that would regulate off highway vehicles (OHV) on city streets.

The proposed ordinance would make it illegal to drive OHVs on a paved public road in the city.

It reasons that OHVs are designed only for unpaved travel and that their high centers of gravity and knobby tires are dangerous on pavement. The council’s agenda notes that there have been four rollovers within the city since 2020. And the council learned last winter that some OHV tires are wrongly labeled as being compliant with federal vehicle standards.

The city would also enter into an agreement with OHV rental companies to install turn signals, quieter mufflers, speed restrictors and even safety flags.

In addition, the agreements would require OHV rental companies to limit rentals, give guided tours and create permits for local off-road trails.
