Is 4 too young to start school? California says no with 't-K' program

It’s the beginning of a new school year, and, in neighboring California, some big school districts are trying to lure a new demographic to their campuses: 4-year-olds. 

It’s all part of not pre-K, but t-K. Transitional kindergarten is an idea Patricia Lozano told us goes back more than a decade.

Lozano is executive director of the nonprofit Early Edge California, which advocates for access to high quality early learning programs there. California Gov. Gavin Newsom recently expanded the state’s investment in the program. Schools are hoping to use it to boost enrollment that has been lagging since the pandemic.
