Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport concession workers vote to authorize strike

Concession workers at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport voted on Friday to authorize a strike for better wages and working conditions.

According to the labor union, UNITE HERE Local 11, 98% of SSP America employees voted to strike. SSP America employs over 400 airport workers, including cashiers, cooks and bartenders at places such as Dunkin’ Donuts and Four Peaks Brewing Company.

UNITE HERE Local 11 said negotiations fell apart when SSP did not take action on proposals made by the union.

Workers also filed unfair labor practice charges, alleging the company engaged in “unlawful disciplinary actions, unilateral changes, and unlawful surveillance.”

A strike authorization means workers can walk out any day following approval.
