The Maricopa County Department of Public Health has confirmed 180 heat-associated deaths since April.
But there are many deaths still under investigation, according to Sonia Singh, the department’s public information officer.
“Right now we have 330 that are still under investigation,” she said. “Compared to last year at this time there were 255. So unfortunately, this looks like higher numbers than we’ve seen before.”
Singh also said there were over 400 heat-associated deaths in total last year, which was a record. That was an increase of 25% from 2021.
The department maintains a heat relief map.
