Biggs sends 'warning call' to House GOP about Freedom Caucus demands as shutdown looms

Congress has until Sept. 30 to adopt a new budget before funding for federal agencies runs out. That's less than three weeks away.

The Freedom Caucus released a statement in late August declaring an ultimatum: its members will not support any funding measure if it fails to include a new border security bill or end "woke" policies in the Pentagon.

Gilbert Republican Andy Biggs, the former chair of the Freedom Caucus, urged House GOP leadership to meet the demands of his colleagues.

"We’re sounding the warning call," Biggs said. "We’re reminding our leadership: you need the votes. And we’re begging our leadership: Listen to us."

Biggs is among those also pushing for harsher spending cuts.

"Do not take us on a further irresponsible spending path," he said. "Let’s have the truth. Let’s be honest. Let’s allow participation from the American people but also their elected representatives."

But those harsh spending cuts would violate a previous agreement that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Joe Biden struck during a fight over the debt limit.
