The city of Phoenix is now accepting pre-applications for Section 8 housing choice vouchers for the first time since 2016.
In the Section 8 program, low-income renters typically put 30% of their income toward rent, and the voucher covers the remainder, up to a certain amount. But cities have limited numbers of vouchers available from the federal government, which is why waitlists are often full for years at a time.
The vouchers do not guarantee housing. But since 2022, Phoenix has offered a $2,000 incentive to encourage more landlords to rent to voucher holders.
Phoenix will accept pre-applications through Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. After that, applicants will be randomized and added to the waitlist as spots become available.
Applications can be submitted online at phxhousing.myhousing.com. Paper applications are also available at the Section 8 office located at 830 E. Jefferson St. Assistance is available via email at [email protected] or phone at 602-534-3030.
