ADOT, MCDOT to share grant for tech to make work zones safer

The Arizona and Maricopa County departments of transportation will share a nearly million-dollar grant to bring some new technology to work zones.

ADOT spokesman Garin Groff said the new gadgets will hopefully make those areas safer.

“The technology includes intelligent traffic cones that can alert a work crew if a vehicle enters a construction area," he said. "An alarm will sound indicating that work crews need to look out for incoming vehicles.”

He said they’ll also get smart rumble strips that activate based on traffic flow to warn motorists to slow down. The technology is expected to roll out later this year.
