What Valleywise Health is seeing with opt-out HIV testing for all

With COVID-19, RSV and the flu dominating the health care conversation right now, it can be easy to forget about another virus that’s circulating: HIV.

While care for people with the AIDS virus has improved greatly since the late '80s — now it’s possible to live a normal life with HIV, and PReP makes it possible to protect yourself from the virus — it’s still out there.

Dr. Kara Geren sees it all the time. She’s an emergency medicine physician at Valleywise Health, where they do things a little differently when it comes to HIV testing. The county hospital has the only ER in Arizona that routinely offers opt-out HIV testing to patients, instead of opt-in.

The Show spoke with her more about it, beginning with why, since most people assume AIDS is basically gone today.
