Pinal County, Arizona Department of Revenue must refund $80M to taxpayers, motion says

The Goldwater Institute recently filed a motion demanding Pinal County and the Arizona Department of Revenue return taxpayer money. In 2017, Goldwater successfully challenged the county and state over the legality of collecting a new transportation tax from the public.

Tim Sandefur is the institute’s vice president of legal affairs and spoke about the situation on conservative talk radio KNTR.

“Eighty million dollars is the best estimate that we’ve heard of how much money is supposedly sitting in this account, and the county and the Department of Revenue are refusing to hand this money back to the taxpayers whose money it is," he said.

In August, the Department of Revenue said in a statement that it would not process refunds from the tax. Sandefur says county officials must return the money to the taxpayers.
