Many participated in a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration at the Arizona State Capitol Friday. Those in attendance witnessed “El Grito,” a Mexican chant symbolizing the start of a revolution that led to Mexican independence from Spain.
Arizona state representative Mariana Sandoval says there is significance behind choosing to celebrate at the Capitol.
“One of the main purposes why Senator Hernandez and I wanted to host this event at the Capitol is because in the past that place was a place of pain and division with SB 1070 and protests,” she said.
In 2010, Arizona lawmakers passed SB 1070, a controversial piece of immigration enforcement legislation, colloquially referred to as the “show me your papers” law. Key portions of the law were struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court.
