Phoenix plan to donate guns to Ukraine is illegal, Arizona attorney general says

In a report issued today, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes says her office found that a Phoenix City Council ordinance to donate firearms to Ukrainian police is unlawful.

Mayes gave the city 30 days for to repeal the ordinance.

In June, Phoenix City Council passed the ordinance to donate up to 600 unclaimed firearms to the National Police of Ukraine.

Phoenix compared the move to former Governor Doug Ducey donating bulletproof vests and other surplus equipment.

But two state GOP representatives complained that Arizona law only allows for unclaimed firearms to be sold, not donated. Mayes started her investigation at the pair’s request.

According to the AG’s report, Phoenix has since canceled its agreement with an exporting company that was set to deliver the firearms.

A city spokesperson said the city council will look at rescinding the ordinance during its meeting next week.
