Tempe police officer will represent Arizona in Miss USA competition

A Tempe police officer will compete in the upcoming Miss USA pageant. Candace Kanavel will represent the Grand Canyon state after winning Miss Arizona USA.

According to the city, Kanavel will be the first police officer to participate in the Miss USA pageant.

Her interest in policing began when she attended Arizona State University.

Kanavel also serves as a SWAT hostage negotiator and is trained in crisis intervention. Her status as a pageant contestant and police officer brings attention to the department’s efforts toward making 30% of its workforce women by 2030.

The Miss USA pageant takes place in Reno, Nevada, later this month. Kanavel will compete to potentially represent the United States in the Miss Universe pageant.
