Earlier this month, a man from out of town died while attempting to hike the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim in a day. There are signs all over the park warning people against this, but hikers do it all the time.
In fact, some consider a rim-to-rim hike too easy, and instead they run from the North Rim to the South Rim and back again. There’s a lot of one-upping in extreme sports these days, and some consider the Grand Canyon their playground for such endeavors.
The whole phenomenon frustrates people like Annette McGivney, who knows the canyon intimately — and not from running it as fast as she can. She wrote about this in 2016 for Backpacker magazine, and the debate has only heated up since then.
She joined The Show to discuss more.
