The U.S. Forest Service is burning the Moonset Pit waste pile earlier this year

The Williams Ranger District resumed fuels reduction work on the Kaibab National Forest on Monday.

The U.S. Forest Service typically burns the Moonset Pit waste pile in the winter, but fire managers say an earlier burn could be beneficial for the forest.

The Moonset Pit is a green waste disposal site near the community of parks, serving as a location for the disposal of natural forest debris.

According to a press release, fire managers chose to ignite the pit now for better smoke ventilation and a faster fire.

Additionally, the forest has received enough moisture over the past month, creating ideal burning conditions.

The pit will reopen for local use in spring 2024.
