The baseball season is coming to a close — and so is the 52-year career of Arizona Diamondbacks broadcaster Greg Schulte.
The team’s play-by-play announcer since their inaugural season in 1998, Schulte said he planned to retire last year. But after missing games due to chemotherapy treatments, he decided to return one last time.
“It’ll be a nice way to end it,” Schulte said. “It’s been a healthy year and I knock on wood that that continues. But I just felt it was time.”
Schulte, who made the iconic call of Luis Gonzalez’s World Series-winning hit in 2001, will be honored in a pregame ceremony ahead of Sunday’s regular-season finale.
And the Diamondbacks, currently second in the Wild Card standings, are hoping for another magical October.
