This year’s monsoon season was the ultimate "non-soon" with less than a quarter inch of rain recorded at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport and very little rain throughout the rest of Arizona.
This follows a summer in which we saw record rainfall throughout the Southwest.
It all plays into the new normal we hear so much about in climate coverage today, a new pattern of monsoon seasons that will look less like our memories of epic dust storms and afternoon downpours. It has immediate effects for the vast rural parts of our state that remained dry as a bone this summer.
The Show spoke more about it all with the University of Arizona’s Chris Castro, professor of hydrology and atmospheric sciences, and Dave Goodrich, research hydraulic engineer with the United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service in Tucson.
