Salt River Fire nearly out; smolder piles are left

The Salt River Fire is nearly contained. Those in and around the East Valley who continue to smell smoke should take precautions and limit their time outside.

Tribal President Martin Harvier says the landfill fire, in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, has been broken down into three smoldering piles. One is now out.

“The remaining two piles are very well contained. Currently there are no open flames and our efforts remain dedicated to halting all smoldering and subsequently smoke," Harvier said.

He says they continue to monitor the air quality. What has been burning is “green waste," which he says is non-toxic plant-based materials.
