Coyotes owner sends open letter to fans weeks after announcing entertainment district plan in Reno

The owner of the Arizona Coyotes says in an open letter to hockey fans that metro Phoenix is where he wants his team to have a permanent home.

Alex Meruelo also recently announced plans to transform a resort he owns in Reno, Nevada, into an entertainment district with an arena.

A news release from the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno says $1 billion will be spent over the next decade to transform the 140-acre property into an entertainment district.

The project centerpiece will be an arena featuring luxury suites.

Meruelo and the University of Nevada president are exploring if the venue can be made into the home for the school’s men's basketball program.

Meruelo’s letter to Coyotes fans says he was disappointed that Tempe voters rejected his arena proposal in May, but he is not defeated.

Meruelo also says that the Coyotes are using all resources to find a permanent home in metro Phoenix that local fans deserve.
