Lexicographers and linguists are working on a dictionary of African American English

The group of lexicographers and linguists working on the Oxford Dictionary of African American English has released a sneak peek at some of the words that will be in the dictionary.

Among the entries: old school, kitchen and cakewalk. The full dictionary is expected to be released in spring 2024.

Sonja Lanehart is a professor of linguistics in education at the University of Arizona, and a member of the advisory board for the Oxford Dictionary of African-American English. The Show spoke with Lanehart about what’s different about this effort than similar ones in the past.
