The Mercury went outside the WNBA to find their new coach — longtime NBA assistant Nate Tibbetts. He most recently coached with the Orlando Magic.
According to ESPN, Tibbetts will be the highest-paid coach in the WNBA, eclipsing the million-dollar salary of Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon.
In a press release, Mercury and Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia hailed the hiring of Tibbetts as part of a “new standard for investment in women’s sports.”
The Mercury made a change mid-season, firing coach Vanessa Nygaard after a 2-and-10 start. Nikki Blue served as the interim coach for the remainder of the season.
